GETTING INSPIRED
I first started creating travel content in March of 2020, just before the world came to a sudden pause for the pandemic. My adventure began with a planned family trip to the Virgin Islands, a beautiful escape, not knowing that just days later, we’d all be told that our jobs wouldn’t be reopening and lockdowns would spread across the U.S. Like many, I had to face the reality that I’d be finishing university and graduating during the pandemic—a strange and bittersweet experience that felt both surreal and isolating.

After graduating, the job market was tough to navigate. For six months, I found myself searching for full-time work while holding onto my part-time job at Express (the clothing brand). I remember the days vividly—three of us PR students, along with a PhD student, all working retail together, sharing the same uncertainties, and all interviewing for jobs at the same time. It was at least a small reminder that we weren’t alone in this struggle.

When I finally landed a full-time remote position as an intern at a PR agency in Chicago, it felt like a huge moment of relief. I celebrated, not just for myself, but for my friends too, as they also began securing jobs shortly after. We were finally about to start our big kid job.
After graduation, I went through a bit of an existential crisis. I was the first generation to complete university, but there was no graduation ceremony to mark the moment—four struggling years without that big, celebratory pivot into adulthood. Being remote right after finishing school only deepened that sense of disconnection. It felt like the world was moving on, but I hadn’t officially stepped into it yet. So, I decided I needed to see the world for myself, and that’s when my passion for travel truly took off.
I wanted the adrenaline of change so much that my anxieties about unfamiliar places seemed to melt away. I ventured solo through Europe and Southeast Asia, while my mom and aunt's suspicion and worry grew with each mountain photo or wild animal I came across.
So far, I’ve visited over 10 incredible countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, Bali, Japan, Turkey, Paris, Spain, Singapore, and Qatar. Every destination has helped me discover more about myself—like my organization and planning skills, my patience, my troubleshooting, my kindness to strangers, and my ability to set boundaries. I’ve also learned to manage money, and pick up basic languages and manners quickly. Each trip highlights where I excel and areas I want to improve, and with every journey, I get better. It’s been like Life Lessons 101 - except mistakes can mean losing a lot of money, getting sick, losing your identity (passport), or even sleeping in an airport.
Overall, I love sharing these journeys and documenting my adventures with camera in hand, connecting with new people and hearing their stories—both the good and the bad. I try not to romanticize each place too much, because I’m mindful of the impact tourism can have on certain locations, from gentrification and pollution to the strain on local economies. I also make it a priority to respect the customs of each destination and pass that knowledge along to others—especially random tourists who haven’t done their research (it happens a lot, and it’s so embarrassing to witness).

Challenges
One of my biggest hurdles as a travel content creator has been overcoming my shyness when it comes to filming myself. Creating videos requires a level of vulnerability that I’m still learning to embrace. However, my love for socializing, meeting new people, and taking on fresh challenges keeps me motivated. I strive to maintain an open mind while traveling, immersing myself in each culture and welcoming new experiences.

Black Expats on the Road
Travel has also shown me that there’s a whole community of us out here! While representation in travel content is crucial, I believe it’s especially important for Black travelers. The resources can often feel limited, and they vary based on the political climate and customs of each destination. This is why I keep a running list of resources for hair care, clothing, and skincare wherever I go, ensuring that others can find the information they need.

Personal Growth
They say traveling reveals your true self, and I’ve found that to be absolutely true—especially when traveling solo! I’ve become more organized, calculated, and prepared for my adventures. However, I’ve also realized the importance of letting some things unfold naturally.
Negativity can creep in, even amidst a mountain of flowers, but it’s essential not to let it ruin your experience or dictate where you feel welcome. You must advocate for yourself; where respect is lacking, assert your presence. You are here, despite any challenges you’ve faced, and you deserve to be seen and celebrated.
